Why Do I Feel Fine One Minute — Then Completely Overwhelmed?

Some days something barely affects you.

You deal with it.

It doesn’t take over the whole day.

And then there are days when the same thing feels completely different.

A small change of plan.

A request.

A conversation.

A task you've done a hundred times before.

And suddenly it feels like too much.

And that's what feels so confusing.

Because nothing about it seems that different.

Which can leave you wondering:

"What happened?"

"Why am I struggling with this all of a sudden?"

"Why could I cope yesterday but not today?"

It's easy to assume the answer must be the thing that's right in front of you.

The conversation.

The task.

The noise.

The interruption.

The person.

But sometimes what we're feeling isn't only about what's happening in that moment.

Sometimes it's about everything that came before it too.

The things we've been managing.

The things we've been thinking about.

The things that have needed your attention.

The adjustments you've made without really thinking about them.

So by the time that one thing happens, there may already be less left than you realised.

Not because you’re making a big deal out of nothing.

But because what you have available can change from day to day.

That can be hard to remember when you're looking at one moment in isolation.

Especially when the same situation felt manageable another day.

Being able to get on with things isn't always consistent.

Being able to handle something once doesn't guarantee it will feel the same every time.

Neither are the demands being placed on you.

Which is why the question isn't always:

"Why am I reacting like this?"

Sometimes the question is:

"What else has been going on that might be making this feel harder today?"

Because when we only look at the moment itself, it's easy to miss everything else that may have been happening around it.

And sometimes that wider view can help things make a little more sense.

Not because it changes how you feel.

But because it changes how you understand it.
