When Life Keeps Moving, But You Start Responding Differently
Updated: Jul 9
This piece is the seventh part of the Making Life Workable series —
a lived exploration of what happens when something doesn’t feel quite right anymore,
while everyday life continues around it.
Each part looks at a different moment in that experience —
not to tell you what to do, but to help you notice what might already be there.
You don't need to read this series in order. Just start wherever something feels familiar.
If you're new to this series, you're welcome to continue reading here. If you'd prefer to begin at the start, Part 1 is here.
Part 7 - When life keeps moving, but you begin responding differently
The same responsibilities are still there.
The same people.
The same things needing your attention.
But something in you is starting to notice
where keeping things going
has been asking more from you than you realised —
and where you may have been pushing past yourself to keep it all going.

After noticing something isn’t working,
after things have slowed or shifted,
people often expect a clear answer to arrive.
A final plan.
An immediate decision.
A clearer sense of where this is all going.
But that isn’t always what happens.
Everyday life continues while things are unfolding.
You may still be in the same home.
Still in the same relationships.
Still responsible for the same things.
There are still the ordinary things that need doing.
Things don’t suddenly become easy.
But you start noticing the moments
where keeping everything going has been asking more from you than you realised.
You notice where you automatically say yes.
Where you rush even when no one is directly asking you to.
Where you feel yourself tense up before ordinary things.
Where you tell yourself something is “fine”
because stopping to look at it properly feels harder.
And once you start noticing those moments, it becomes harder to slip back into them in quite the same way.
That doesn’t mean you stop doing hard things.
You still do what needs doing.
You still care.
You still make compromises.
You still have days where life asks a lot from you.
But something is starting to feel different.
You’re less willing to leave yourself out of it just to keep everything going.
That can sound small.
But this is often where it starts to show up in real life.
It might look like saying, “I can do that — just not today.”
It might look like not filling every gap in the week just because it’s there.
It might look like leaving something undone — and noticing the pull to rush back to it.
It might look like noticing that a conversation or place takes more out of you than you’ve been admitting.
It might look like catching yourself when you say “I should” — and quietly checking whether it actually needs your attention right now.
And sometimes it can still feel unclear.
Not because nothing is changing.
But because you’re no longer doing things in the old way,
and you don’t always know yet what fully works instead.
Sometimes nothing changes on the outside straight away.
But inside, you start noticing more clearly
about what things actually take — and what helps you stay ok within them.
And that can feel uncomfortable at first.
Especially when life — and the world around you — still asks things of you.
Still needs things from you.
Still seems to expect you to keep going as usual.
To keep going.
To take things on quietly.
To keep everything steady.
You may still feel the pull to explain yourself.
To make it sound reasonable.
To show that you’re not being difficult.
But often, making life more workable starts here:
Not with a perfect answer.
Not with a whole new life.
Just with noticing where you’re about to push past what you feel just to get through the moment — and not doing it quite so quickly.
Even when that feels inconvenient.
Even when it makes things a little more awkward at first.
Even when the day still has to keep moving.
This isn’t about getting everything right or having it all figured out straight away.
It’s about being in your life without constantly overriding yourself just to keep it going.
And over time, that matters.
Because those small moments add up.
They change how much you take on.
How often you adjust yourself just to keep things going.
How much you give without noticing.
Life may still ask a lot from you.
But you’re less likely to give more of yourself than you mean to without noticing.
And that can begin to change how things feel.
And often, that is where things begin to feel a little more possible.
As you start noticing more,
you may also begin to see that not everyone experiences the same day in the same way.
And that can change how you respond.
This sits within Emotional Wellbeing — where emotions are treated as information, not something to fix.
Emotions don’t need solving. They need space to move.

Whatever brought you here today, I hope you leave with something that helps life make a little more sense, or perhaps opens the door to something you hadn't noticed before.
